Book - Always Blue for Chicu
Written and illustrated by Karen Dugan
If you were to list all the many parrot issues Karen Dugan touches on in her childrenÍs book 'Always Blue for Chicu' you might raise your eyebrows. Really? All in one story? But she pulls it off, not only brilliantly but beautifully too, with whimsical illustrations in stunning full page arrays.
This touching and hopeful tale will capture childrenÍs imaginations and win their hearts; I highly recommend it for animal lovers of all ages.
When Karen contacted the World Parrot Trust while researching her book she showed an impressive grasp of the many issues facing parrots, both in the wild and as pets in our homes. She weaves that understanding into a graceful story that is powerful yet not hard-hitting. She grapples with freedom gained and lost, friendships forged and broken, and the sometimes comical, sometimes heartbreaking and surely complex life of a parrot taken out of his element.
Always Blue for Chicu received high marks from school aged reviewers who were mesmerized by the story and the characters but also the detailed and captivating illustrations. They were completely hooked by the clever use of repetitive graphics and phrases which delicately tie the story together from beginning to end.
This book for students in the 4th grade or higher has all the components of a good story. A baby parrot was stolen from his protective home in a large tree (drama), spent time on a naval ship out at sea (suspense) and was in dire straits at times, but managed to find his first and best owner/partner and safety. ( happy ending.)
